Chapter 11

“He actually accused you of being the person who killed Tula and tried to kill Lynn?” Betts asked. She unlocked the storage door on the outside of the campervan to put her small duffle bag in there while we drove to New York.

“Can you believe it?” Dottie was revolted by the situation. “I know the hunk—I mean Hank—is doing his job, but he should know you better than that.”

“He does. But he is doing his job.” I put the storage door down and locked it.

“I hate to say it, but you’re right. I mean, you did go over there super early this morning, and you did know about the diamond.” Abby rubbed her finger as though the diamond was still sitting on it. “So I guess it would be easy to have tried to kill Lynn, and when you heard Dawn come in, and you hid, letting her take the fall.”

“Really? I outta kick you in the heinie for thinking Maybelline could do something like that.” Dottie had become the mama bear to me, even though Mary Elizabeth lived here now. “She’s our friend. You know she didn’t keel no one.” Dottie’s twangy southern tone took a very deep turn when she got angry, defensive, or just onery.

“I’m only playing devil’s advocate.” Abby’s face softened when she looked at me. “Who on earth would ever give a very expensive diamond to her foster brother as a thank-you? No one but you.” She tucked her hand in my arm as we made our way up the steps of the campervan.

“Of course, my timeline was established that I couldn’t’ve tried to kill Lynn, but Hank still had to bring me in, and I get that.” Honestly, I didn’t get that. I’d been lucky enough to find Hank and the love he had for me. I just wasn’t sure it was enough, and I had questioned it over the last few months.

Believe me, I had compromised a lot when I was with Paul. Even having to accept the things and situations my life had brought on me, I didn’t feel I needed to do that anymore. I’d really thought Hank and I could stand the test of time until Beck Greer, a young man who lived in Ava’s neighborhood, had come to do some work for me at the campground. I had sworn off children and a family. Hank didn’t want children. Slowly Beck had opened my mind, and now with the possibility of me wanting children back on the table, I could feel my relationship with Hank sliding off.

“I can’t believe Hank is just letting you up and go to New York.” Betts was my closest friend from the Laundry Club ladies, but she’d been dealing with her own personal demons, and I’d yet to let her in on the discovery of where I now stood on children.

“I don’t let Hank tell me where I can go. Of course I talked to him about it.” I wondered if I was ever going to tell the ladies just what was really going on in my head.
